We are told the story through the eyes of little girl, Scout, and the day-to-day prejudices she faces amongst society. Her father, Atticus, is a white man defending a Negro, even though the town frowns upon such a thing. He is trying to bring order to the socially segregating views, both within the court and out.
The most common form of prejudice, which is seen many times throughout the novel, is racism. Furthermore, it is obvious Bob Ewell is abusive to his daughter, Mayella, and that he is the one who violated her, not Tom Robinson p. Since there is such hypocrisy in Maycomb, there are excuses made for whites. The jury probably thinks that if they pronounce Tom innocent the citizens will mock them as they do to Atticus.
Harper Lee uses hypocrisy to show how the people of Maycomb are so engulfed in a variety of elements that they unknowingly complete acts of unjustified discrimination. Racism is wrought within the whole story. Racism is pervasive throughout the town of Maycomb, Alabama, with nearly the entire population practicing the injustice.
They dehumanize the blacks arrogantly and ignorantly, believing they are superior due to their skin color, Even though it is an immoral act, the society separates by skin color and the population is forced between either agreeing or disagreeing with this prejudice. She was a very racist woman, which caused a conflict between her and her husband, whose best friend was a black man named Johnny Dobbs. Raney believed that if her mother could be racist that she could be too.
Charles and Raney had very different beliefs and that is why they have trouble getting along with each other sometimes. Raney comes from a family who has strong family and religious ties. This also develops the plotline of the novel and adds tension. Sting of Prejudice In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee there are many characters whose lives and thoughts about one another are distorted by prejudice and stereotyping.
Tom Robinson is a victim of prejudice and is treated unfairly because of the color of his skin. The third character Dolfus Raymond is not accepted by the community because he is married to a black woman.
Obviously the south was for slavery and they did not like the book because they did not want others to know what was happening to their slaves. If people were to find out they knew people would reject to it immediately and that is exactly what happened. The South disliked the book Tom continued to refuse, so Legree beat Tom until he passed out and Tom ended up dying. George's master treated him horribly too. He treated him so bad that when George invented a machine for cleaning up the hemp, his master got upset about it and took him back to his plantation.
She says how they are not allowed at white peoples church and white people are not allowed at black peoples church. Maycomb people are the sin of all prejudice in Maycomb.
Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are mockingbirds. Both of these men are victims of prejudice. To take advantage of these men would be a sin, just as it would kill a mockingbird. He would help Mayella with her chores, and the part of it that made him a mockingbird is that he did not want anything in return.
The Ewell family and many other people in Maycomb have sinned, distinctively Bob Ewell, because they took advantage and prejudged to innocent men; Tom Robinson and Boo Radley. People who help the mockingbirds also become victims of prejudice. Atticus Finch tries to defend Tom, but in doing so, Atticus becomes a victim of prejudice. People in Maycomb lose respect for Atticus because he is defending a black man.
In Maycomb, it was erroneous to defend a black man against a white. Atticus is also gossiped about, essentially by Mrs. Tom and Boo are not given a chance.
Tom died because he was not given a chance, because of his skin color, and also because he was prejudged. He was convicted guilty of rape, and ended up shot. Tom was a mockingbird though because he showed intrepidity. Boo was not given a chance either. Mrs Merriweather is more interested in the Mruna tribe as they are not Christians and believes white missionaries can save their souls by turning them into Christians and introducing them to the Bible.
Dolphus Raymond pretends to be continually drunk in order to avoid questions about the choices he has made in life. He is in a relationship with a black woman and has several children with her but he knows this would be severely frowned upon by others.
He and his family are treated as outcasts. It helps folks if they can latch on to a reason. If the people of Maycomb think he is drunk, Dolphus believes they will leave him alone to lead his own life, however awful they feel it to be. However, racial intolerance is not the only prejudice to be included in the novel. Many residents of Maycomb are presented as being narrow-minded and intolerant of anyone who does not conform to their expectations. Boo Radley is persecuted and gossiped about because he has not been seen outside his house since he was a teenager.
It is evident throughout the novel that the trial is a formality only and that Tom Robinson will be found guilty. Atticus to Jem. No matter how much evidence proved their innocence, if they had been accused of a crime by a white person they would always be found guilty.
However they are far less sympathetic to the black people living in Maycomb. Their mouths go down to here. Mrs Merriweather to Mrs Farrow.
