For example, your carefully constructed assertive message will probably not work if the other person is very emotional. Or maybe the other person is under influence and not thinking clearly.

Sometimes it pays to surrender and try again later after the other person has had time to calm down. Assertiveness is an important skill to develop and can be a great tool, as long as you know when to use it. It can boost self-esteem and well-being, lower anxiety, and help you fulfill your needs. The most important benefit, however, is creating better relationships through calm, respectful communication. It can take some practice, but it will be worth it — even if you just use it to convince your neighbors to be less noisy.
