Essure should no longer be available for implantation. Women seeking contraception are encouraged to discuss all other available birth control options and carefully consider the benefits and risks of each with their health care provider before deciding on the method that is right for them. The information provided below describes the benefits and risks associated with Essure as included in the current labeling.
It is important for women with Essure to know that, based on clinical studies, approximately 8 percent of women who undergo attempts at Essure placement are not able to rely on the device for birth control. While scientific evidence shows that Essure is an effective means of permanent contraception when health care providers and patients follow the appropriate instructions for use, no form of birth control is percent effective. All pregnancies carry some risk to women and their fetus. The risks to women and their fetus if pregnancy occurs after Essure placement are unknown.
While successful pregnancies with healthy deliveries have been reported with Essure devices in place, neonatal or pregnancy complications have also been reported.
Also, the FDA has received reports of pregnancy losses in women who became pregnant following Essure placement.
If a woman becomes pregnant with Essure, there may be a risk for the pregnancy to occur outside of the uterus ectopic pregnancy , which may result in serious complications.
Peter Khamvongsa has extensive experience performing Essure removal, and his skill and understanding nature allow you to have the procedure with the least amount of discomfort and enjoy a quick, safe recovery. Essure is a small, flexible device with an inner coil made from stainless steel and an outer coil crafted from a mixture of nickel and titanium. It also has an exterior layer of fibers made from polyethylene terephthalate PET , a strong but lightweight plastic.
Over the course of about three months, the PET fibers cause fibrosis to occur around each device. Fibrosis is a process where connective tissue develops in response to injury, and in this case, it serves to block the fallopian tubes permanently. Women with Essure were checked by their gynecologists several months after its insertion to see if the fallopian tubes were successfully obstructed. Unfortunately, many women who opted for Essure experienced uncomfortable and alarming side effects , including:.
Other especially worrisome side effects were anaphylactic shock a life-threatening allergic reaction and even perforation of the uterus, which can provoke a systemic inflammatory reaction. Sometimes injury would be caused by flawed placement that included fallopian tube rupture, or the device would become displaced and travel through the uterus to other organs.
Swainston prepares you for surgery and explains the procedure to you in detail. Swainston can access the device. During the surgery, Dr. Swainston uses robot-assisted techniques to remove the device and any scar tissue that has formed in your fallopian tubes. Studies show that Recovery from the surgery is usually quick; you should be back to your normal activities within a week.
