Can i piece batting

I make my own fusible basting tape by cutting 2. Much cheaper than buying the basting tape. Have been doing it for years.

When I first started I would put the tape on both sides of the batting but now I just fuse it to the top side. I have tried many different ways. The batting makes a difference to the method. Batting does have cross grain, so make sure it all going the same. Otherwise you will see problems, even with a curve. But who cares if we mix it all to give to charity? You may spent more time piecing it together to save a few dollars and quilt a mess of problems.

I should know I have been given batting for charity that has been one big headache. I butt the batting edges together with no overlap and then layer it between the top and the backing. I pin well and then quilt. I cut it much the same way, but a friend added before you move it draw some lines across the cut with an air marker so you have registration lines to match up. That way you are more likely to end up with a flat seam.

To start, I thought I had enough fabric on-hand to make the back. Nope…not quite enough of anything. So, off to the fabric store I went! Then we had a bit of trouble finding the right shade of mint an endless battle for me—I really just need to design a perfect mint fabric line! About ten seconds after realizing that I already had 15 yards of fabric that I had been waiting for days to go get, I realized that amidst my perfect-mint-fabric-hunt I forgot to get batting.

At this point, it was hopeless. My family was going to be at my house for our Saturday Easter Celebration in an hour. The next day was Easter Sunday. The baby was due Monday. This stitch takes three small stitches to the left and then three small stitches back to the right to get the zigzag look, but adds more stability.

This stitch also helps keep the joint very flat.
