To make it more complicated, instead of straight up brown hair, now there's tiger eye , deep sable brown, and even chocolate mauve if you're vying for a tinge of rose gold.
But the balayage, highlights, and smatterings of color are just part of step two. It's step one you need to settle on first: the base color. Although, trying to decide on that can keep you up at night, too. To help make the selection process a bit easier, we spoke with master colorist Gio Bargallo of Rita Hazan Salon in New York City to compile the ultimate hair color chart for brunette, red, and blond shades. Peruse the colors below, study up on their undertones, and bring your new hair inspo to the salon.
Keep scrolling to get started! Platinum blond pictured above on actress Cynthia Erivo is the lightest of all the blond shades. Avoid trying to achieve this color on your own—doing so can yield more yellow than you bargained for. Macadamia nut has a bit more of a golden tint to it than platinum blonde does. It works beautifully with skin that has blush undertones and is especially striking with light eyes: green, blue, and hazel or like actress Kate Bosworth's, a combo!
How can you know what your skin tone is to decide whether to lighten or darken your hair? Look closely at the veins in your wrists. And, as you probably already know, it tends to get a tan quickly under the sun. You must consider those when deciding on a lighter or darker color.
I advise you to choose warm colors for your hair. For example, if you have black hair, you can go for lightening it into the browns, such as chocolate or caramel instead of mahogany brown.
When you look at your wrists, are your veins blue? It means that you have to look for cool colors for your hair. For example, mahogany or brown, will be your best bet. Choose a section of your hair and hold it up, extended outwards away from the rest of your hair. Hair always looks darker when it's layered on top of the rest of your hair and no light can come through the section. For best results, make sure you are standing in natural light.
Your hair is always lightest around the front of your hairline, where it is finer and gets the most sun exposure. Take a very good look at the shade of hair growing out from your roots, close to your head. If what you're seeing is mostly gray, look for the color in between the grays. Often, our hair gets darker when we get older. Now take a look at the hair color chart on this page. Which shade best matches your current natural hair color? Going darker? Important to note: permanent hair color cannot lighten hair that has already been color-treated.
So, if you most recently colored your hair with a level 5 shade, applying a level 6 shade on top of it will not lighten your color at all. Once the pigment is removed, the hair cuticle lifts allowing the hair color to be absorbed. Adding color to your hair allows you to achieve a variety of different looks from funky and bold to a more natural subtle look. There are many different hair colors and brands out there, to find out which is the best for your hair consult with a professional or visit your local beauty school for their expert advice.
I wanted to know if there is a healthier way to color my hair with developer and a color dye of my choice. I researched that some stylist use developer to avoid bleaching a clients hair and though it might not give the client a dramatic light effect, they can gradually lighten the hair through various hair sessions.
I have colored my hair relaxed hair before and it was bleached and If I can avoid that then that would be great. Is this true and if so is there a negative side effect to just using a developer? I have professional highlights from a permanent haircolor that lifted the hair using a hydrogen peroxide developer.
This process raises or opens up the cuticle layer of the hair. Be sure and use a moisturizing conditioner after each of these, followed by a cool water rinse. I use both of these directly after coloring just to be safe, and then the sealer a couple times a week after shampooing and before conditioning with great success.
