Pharmacy assistants typically handle more of the administrative side of the pharmacy. They may do some counting of medication or labeling bottles, but they don't typically prepare the prescriptions for customers. Instead, they might stock the pharmacy shelves, run the cash register and answer phone calls to the pharmacy. When a customer comes into the pharmacy with a prescription, the assistant may take the prescription to give to the pharmacists or pharmacy tech.
Assistants may also package shipments or get prescriptions ready for customer after the tech or pharmacist fills them. Neither techs nor assistants have formal education requirements in most states beyond a high school diploma. There are programs available in pharmacy technology that you can take to pursue either career path, but on-the-job training is also common. Pharmacy assistants don't need any type of licensing, but pharmacy techs do need to be certified in some states.
